I am a retired US Navy intelligence officer and a retired computer security executive. I have always had a distant interest in woodworking but never really had the time to devote to it until I retired. As of January 1, 2015, I am President of the Waxhaw Woodturners in Waxhaw, NC. I am also a member ( and board member) of the Charlotte Woodturners in Charlotte, NC and the founder and leader of the Carolina Piedmont Penturners Group.
I am a woodturner with a “pen”chant for pens. After taking a class on how to turn a pen at Woodcraft in Charlotte shortly after I bought my first lathe, I was hooked. I do turn other things – bowls, pepper mills, vases, small boxes – but I am primarily focused on making fine writing instruments and items that can be made with the same tools used to make pens such as seam rippers, letter openers and hidden storage key chains. I am experimenting with new (well, new to me anyway) techniques and materials. In addition to wood pens, I also use acrylics (such as acrylic acetate, polyester resin and alumilite), polymer clay, stone, PVC and other materials to make my pens. Please feel free to contact me if you would like me to make a pen, pencil, desk set or other items.
